Careers Centre

Developing Apprentices

Apprentices are an important part of the Esh Group culture — many of our senior management team began their careers as apprentices. We currently employ over 90 apprentices, equating to 10% of our workforce, and are proud members of the ‘5% club’.

Positive Training Culture

Construction is a dynamic, exciting and rewarding profession. Our people play a key part in achieving our vision, which can only be achieved through commitment, experience and continuous professional development. Esh Group provides a range of opportunities for training and professional development.

Meeting Space Available

We recently opened the Brian Manning Training Academy opposite our Durham headquarters, just a 3min drive from the A1 (junction 61). We have a range of training and meeting rooms available for hire, in our high-quality, modern venue with a staffed reception area and plenty of parking.

Apprentices & Graduates

Apprentices and graduates are important to the strength of Esh Group; with a strong tradition of growing our own. Many senior managers started in entry level positions. Esh Group welcomes applications from graduates and have a paid gap year placement scheme for enthusiastic undergraduates; offering a unique opportunity to work for different sectors within the Group, ranging from housing infrastructure projects to civil engineering, commercial build, and supporting services.

Learning & Development

Our success is led by our people and that’s why we constantly invest in developing our workforce. The Group has invested over £0.5m in Construction Plant Card Scheme (CPCS) training to upskill our plant operators and to ensure that they were operating to the highest accredited standard. CPCS training is now embedded within the Group. We also support our employees with further and higher-level study, such as NVQ’s, NEBOSH qualifications, HNC’s and HND’s.

Safety

From day one of employment, training is planned to ensure the safety of the workforce and to meet personal aspirations.

Fairness, Inclusion and Respect

We are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive working environment — one which is based on mutual trust and ensures everyone reaches their full potential.

All employees receive equal treatment regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marital or civil partner status, pregnancy or maternity, race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation.

We aim to have the right people, with the right skills, in the right place at the right time, equipped to meet the current and future demands of the business.

Meet Our People

After leaving the army, I got a Bricklaying Apprenticeship and progressed to to become a Site Manager. With 18 years site management experience I joined Esh Property Services in September 2018. What I enjoy about my role is meeting new people and no two days are the same.

Darran Milne

Contracts Manager

As a qualified civil engineer, I have managed construction projects in my native country, Syria, in the Middle East and the UK; this has given me an insight into different international standards, processes and requirements. I joined Esh in 2015 and have completed a number of training courses which I found useful - I sometimes face communication issues but I am completing self-study English to help overcome this.

Hysum Yusifi

Engineer

Esh is a very diverse business with capabilities across many sectors and long term business partners, but equally important, it's a company that was proud of it’s family ethos and cared about the community it worked in. I’m pleased what I saw from the outside is now what I experience every day at work.

Brian Joyce

Construction Manager

Esh provides invaluable experience as our department work across a wide variety of sectors. From carrying out audits on a facilities project within a university to a multimillion commercial build scheme. Health and Safety mainly entails providing practical solutions in order to minimise risk and keep people safe on site.

Lewis Rees

Health & Safety Coordinator

Finding solutions for technical civil engineering problems is the aspect of my role that I most enjoy. Esh undertake a wide range of complex projects which means problems are rarely in short supply and no two are ever the same.

Matthew Morley-Jackson

Trainee Engineer

I came to Lumsden & Carroll on work experience and then applied, successfully, for the role of Apprentice Planner which I really enjoy.

Kirsty Hunt

Apprentice Planner

I choose a career in Civil Engineering for one main reason, to make a positive difference in how people live and help towards building a more sustainable future! A typical day for me is setting out and surveying structures and earthworks, managing subcontractors, keeping an up to date and accurate site diary and help maintaining health and safety at work.

Wesley Matienga

Site Engineer

I enjoy seeing new life be brought into a dead space or a tired building - I have recently joined Esh to project manage the refurbishment of the Grade 2 listed building. This presented the perfect opportunity for me to succeed at what I enjoy doing the most.

Nick Bryant

Project Manager

I have been supported to achieve a degree; I progressed from a Trainee Surveyor, then to Head of Architectural Design. No day is ever the same, which makes it a challenge but exciting.

Dale Morris

Architectural Technician

I have progressed from an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor to a Trainee QS. I'm enjoy having a pro-active job that allows me to visit site to see first-hand how a project is built and contribute to the success of the project.

Beth McQuitty

Trainee Quantity Surveyor

I joined the training team as an Apprentice Administrator. I have achieved a Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business & Administration and progressed into the role of a Training Coordinator.

Beth Swainston

Training Coordinator

I've worked for Esh since 2013 and completed an Apprenticeship during that time. A typical day for me is providing first line support on the IT Helpdesk, setting up equipment and keeping stock organised.

Kevin McCammon

IT Support Technician

My role involves engaging with key clients to ensure that community-based programmes and initiatives are undertaken. I thoroughly enjoy creating, as well as implementing, a communications strategy to showcase all content created.

Francesca Madden

Framework Coordinator

Since joining Esh, I have had extensive training opportunities that have allowed me to develop my role from Apprentice Administrator to an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor within the commercial team. I was pround to win the G4C Apprentice of the Year award 2016.

Ellie Fraser

Quantity Surveyor

Working in our Esh's Social Value tem is such a rewarding and valuable role, I work closely with our site teams to support and making a real difference in our local communities.
