As a growing business it is essential we grow our people.

Everyone at Esh has a regular personal development reviews and access to the group’s in house training team who manage apprenticeships, degree and master’s further education, CPD and the renewal of mandatory training through our training passport system.

Care, Trust, Integrity, Respect and Working Together.

It is not just ‘what you do’ that matters, but also ‘how you do it’. Our values underpin everything we do and help us retain the honest, passionate, hardworking philosophy on which our business is built. Everyone who joins Esh must share our core values.

An inclusive working environment for all.

Every Esh employee is given equal opportunities, equal pay, and are accepted for their differences – creating an inclusive and conducive work environment where employees feel secure and happy. We do not stand for any form of discrimination in our workplace.

The Construction & Built Environment sector really does provide a career for everyone.

To improve the industry’s gender pay gap we need more women to join our sector. We are doing our utmost to encourage women to join the sector by challenging outdated misconceptions of the construction industry and providing females with high quality career guidance within their education.

Our employees are our most valuable asset.

We are committed to providing mental health and wellbeing support to ensure a happy, engaged and productive workforce. It is important we talk about our feelings – we have an in house team of mental health first aiders who are here to provide support.

Our People

I joined Esh after completing an English Degree at University.

I have worked in several different roles in my time at Esh including working in our Bid Team; submitting tenders, creating case studies and CVs, working as a commercial assistant on one of our major frameworks, helping to form a collaborative team. I have also had some experience working in our customer team.

I greatly appreciate how the company adapted and has grown since the global pandemic as I now have a better work/life balance and enjoy working from home. My managers and colleagues have also been very flexible in my return to work after maternity leave and have made the transition easy for me which I am very grateful for.

Catherine Brown

Framework & Commercial Assistant

I joined Esh over 20 years ago at the ripe young age of 18 straight from sixth form. I started as an Assistant Setting-Out Engineer then progressed through multiple roles to Contracts Manager moving around within the business gaining knowledge of the different sectors.

I have recently been promoted to Construction Manager covering General Civils projects ranging in value from approximately £500k up to £8m.

My role covers all aspects of construction management involved in delivering multiple high quality schemes simultaneously and coordinating between all project parties to achieve our overall objective. This includes factors such as health and safety and ensuring our work does not affect the local environment and natural ecology.

Alan Croft

Construction Manager

Before joining Esh I worked as an office manager for a small family run building company.

I am responsible for regulatory matters including document control, 3rd party engagement, ensuring our cloud based Viewpoint system is accurate and up to date and providing relevant paperwork to clients at scheme handover stage.

I would recommend Esh to anyone considering a career in construction. We have a wide variety of job roles and colleagues can use their transferable skills to work on different projects - we are one big team, and no two days are the same.

Michelle Hannant

Technical Coordinator

Before joining Esh in 2000, I was a HGV mechanic for a local stone quarrying company. I started as workshop foreman before being promoted to workshop manager.

My role is primarily to keep our fleet operational and compliant, but I also get involved with all sorts of things from purchasing new vehicles to repairing office windows and everything in between.

I really like the variety which comes with my role, and the ongoing training and development opportunities Esh provide all staff. I would recommend Esh because of its values and its committed staff, plus there are some good staff benefits on offer.

Phil Bassett

I joined Esh in 2015 as an Apprentice Administrator working in the Group's training team. After completing my apprenticeship in Business & Administration, I progressed into the role of a Training Coordinator.

Now, I work across a number of training and development processes, from maintaining our workforce's training passports by organising wide range or fit for purpose training courses, to managing certification and grant claims to the recruitment and development of apprentices and graduates.

I enjoy meeting new recruits and following them through their apprenticeships and degrees, supporting them and their line managers, watching them grow and progress.

Beth Swainston

Training Manager

I worked in Civil Engineering for nearly 40 years prior to joining Esh in 2020 as a contracts manager on a flagship infrastructure scheme in Sunderland - a project close to my home which offered a fine work life balance.

Today I oversee several civil engineering projects ensuring they are suitably resourced and managed. My role is very rewarding; I get involved at the concept stage of a project, support the construction phase and enjoy seeing the finished article - something which I will never tire of.

I work with a fabulous group of people every day, all with a common goal to provide a professional service with a quality end product for our clients. I can honestly say the last two and a half years have flown by, at times they have been challenging, yet on reflection some the most enjoyable of my career, largely due to great coworkers.

Rod Milne

Contracts Manager

I joined Esh in 2021 having previously worked with clients which include the M.O.D, Canals & Rivers Trust, the National trust and the Coal Authority.

The Esh team are great! Everyone I've met are really helpful and assist wherever necessary, I have found it a very comfortable and enjoyable place to work. I feel if I do my best for my colleagues, then they will do the same for me.

Esh has also helped me develop my skill set; since joining I have completed a number of training courses and refreshers.

Graham Crossley

Site Agent

I joined Lumsden & Carroll in 2005 after serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. After leaving the forces I started working through construction agencies as I had little to no experience of the construction industry, I then gained experience operating plant and machinery.

I now work as a Site Supervisor where I organise and complete quality inspections, supervising subcontractors and staff. The training I received since joining the company has only developed my skills further. From more training on plant and machinery to completing an NVQ Level 4.

Life at Esh is challenging but rewarding and every day is different. Esh has helped me develop a career and has so many opportunities on offer. I had emergency surgery three years ago which left me with a disability but every effort was made to ensure I could continue working actively.

Derek Thompson

Site Supervisor

I have worked for Esh for over 8 years. I joined Esh’s affordable housing division in 2015 as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor. Then in 2017 I moved across to our private new-build housing division, Homes by Esh. Over the years I have progressed from Apprentice to Trainee to QS and now Senior QS.

Working at Esh has given me the opportunity to complete my HNC, HND and RICS-accredited Degree, all whilst getting vital on-the-job knowledge and experience. One thing I do enjoy about my role is the variety it offers from day-to-day including desk work, face-to-face meetings and getting out on site to carry out practical measures.

I would recommend Esh as a place to join and grow your knowledge and career, providing you are willing to put the effort in and remain loyal to the business you will be repaid with the relevant qualifications to progress as much as possible. Since the day I started I would say most people are still here which wouldn’t be the case if it wasn’t a good place to work.

Sam Thompson

Senior Quantity Surveyor

I had originally intended to go down the traditional A-level route out of school. But, after my first year of the course I wasn’t really happy and decided to look elsewhere. I eventually found a level 3 construction course at New College Durham. It was there where I found my love for construction and was supported to apply for the apprenticeship quantity surveying role at Esh-Stantec.

I have been working at Esh for six years now and I enjoy working with colleagues across the group. Being a Quantity Surveyor allows me to meet many different people and have different benefits to the way I work. I have the flexibility to work from home two days a week while also being in the office for the other three.

With innovation and progression at the heart of the industry, the perceptions of it being ‘old school’ are changing rapidly as well as the idea that construction is a male-dominated role. For anyone looking to be part of this industry from roles such as Quantity Surveyors or Site engineers, to the accounts management or even the promotional team, construction is a great environment to work and develop a career in with many opportunities in its future. Esh supports and develops these opportunities for all.

Isabelle Hewitt

Quantity Surveyor

I joined Esh straight from school at the age of 16, I was only supposed to be here for a few weeks to help out over the summer, but I have been working here now for over 34 years.

My day-to-day role involves preparing management accounts for Esh Holdings Ltd, assisting with managing the day-to-day cashflow and approving payments out of the bank. Over the years I have completed a lot of training to progress my career including BTEC Higher National in Business, Diploma in Management, Excel training and a number of other training courses.

Esh is a great place to work, there are lots of opportunities to progress your career and the group offers lots of benefits. Even though the business has grown to a multi-million-pound business it has still managed to keep that family feel to it.

Louise Lamb

Group Accounts Manager

I have joined Esh straight from sixth form. I was unsure about going to university and soon realised that I was better suited to a working environment where I knew I could progress in my career and can learn on the job.

I enjoy many aspects of my job role, particularly being involved in meetings about Esh’s plans for carbon reduction. Since my first day, I have been given lots of opportunities to see all different parts of the business so I can get a better understanding of the importance of my role across the Group.

I would recommend Esh as I have been made to feel welcome since the first day and know that there are plenty of people I can get help off if needed.
