Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Council, Mary Lanigan, joined representatives from Esh Construction and Thirteen on site to mark the start of a £3.7 million scheme in South Bank.
Esh is building 28 new bungalows for affordable rent around the Redcar Road area in South Bank. The development is part of a larger housing led regeneration programme ongoing throughout the area and is required to meet the needs of an ageing population.
Designed by HMH Architects, the properties will replace terraces demolished more than ten years ago and will complement the nearby South Bank Eco Village.
Esh Construction’s Divisional Director, Gary Dobson, said: “We are pleased to being working in partnership with Thirteen on a project which will provide much-needed housing and a community where people can enjoy living in later life. As a local contractor, we will harness the benefits of a strong regional presence and supply chain to deliver quality social and economic value for the local community.”
Thirteen’s Head of New Business & Growth, Angela Brockbank, said: “This long-awaited milestone is a great step towards bringing much needed new bungalows to South Bank.
“It’s a really exciting scheme, and we’re thrilled to be working with Esh Construction, as well as the Tees Valley Combined Authority, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Homes England and other partners to deliver these fantastic new homes, which will help boost the regeneration of the area and create vital job opportunities for local people.
“As well as that, these new homes will meet the needs of our ageing population and support people to live independently.”

In addition to Homes England funding, the development was awarded just over £500k by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority from the Government’s Brownfield Housing Fund, which allows local authorities to target investment towards brownfield sites.
