Summer placement follows in family footsteps

Deerness Fencing & Landscaping host Esh founding member's grandson for summer placement.

Deerness Fencing & Landscaping were proud to host Joseph, grandson of Michael Hogan, Esh Group Chairman and founder of Deerness Fencing & Landscaping. Michael established Deerness Fencing & Landscaping, a founding company of Esh Group, in 1970 and Joseph spent time over the summer months learning more about the family heritage while completing a 10-week work placement.

Joseph, who recently sat his A Levels in Design Technology, Physical Education and Psychology, had no prior exposure to fencing and landscaping. However, having had several members of the family previously work for the company, the family link sparked his interest and he has worked alongside employees to undertake a range of tasks and hands-on activities throughout the duration of his placement.

During his time with Deerness Fencing & Landscaping, as well as the on-the-job training in operating the flag lifter, Joseph has completed industry standard training which includes Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling and Face Fit. He has undertaken a range of hard landscaping activities including re-laying flags and pointing and, has gained exposure to the fencing aspect of the role by concreting and levelling posts and installing brackets on walling.

Joseph confirmed that his initial perceptions of the role were early starts and hard work, however he had not anticipated just how hard he would need to work during his placement. Having now been in the role for 10 weeks, Joseph’s perceptions have somewhat altered, and he admits that he did not think the work would be as complex and the role is harder than he thought it would be.

Following his placement, having secured a place at Leeds Beckett University where he will study Event Management & Marketing, Joseph will depart to embark on his university studies. While he completes his qualification, Joseph hopes to build on the already popular event nights he runs at venues throughout the North East by expanding his operation and introducing these in the Leeds area. However, he has not ruled out further exposure to fencing and landscaping.

We wish Joseph the very best of luck with his studies and his future and we hope that he has a very successful career in whichever path he pursues.

Joseph has fully embraced the work placement opportunity and has been a pleasure to work with. He has been exposed to lots of different activities during his time with us and has worked very hard to ensure that all tasks were completed to a high standard”
