Ahead of International Women’s Day 2021, Carol Metcalfe, Commercial Administrator at Lumsden & Carroll speaks about her role at the civil engineering company, why she chose to work in construction and why she would advise young people to consider a career in the industry.
Can you explain your job role and a typical working day?
I provide a range of administration support to the commercial and construction team within the Lumsden & Carroll division.
I am the main point of contact for our domestic subcontractors and ensure we continue to maintain prompt payments. I provide regular reports to the Commercial Director and Construction Director regarding payments, any non-conformance issues and staff allocations. I also provide general administrative support by minuting team meetings and collating toolbox talks.
What attracted you to work in the construction industry and how did you get into your current role?
Few industries truly make a difference within the community and construction is one that does. Whether it’s residential, offices, hospitals, schools, shopping centres, whatever you build will have a lasting impression in our community.
I was living abroad with my family but due to a family member being ill we decided to return to the UK. I had previously worked for the group and saw the job as Commercial Administrator advertised. The group has always been committed to leading the way in the construction. The group care about the people that work there, their clients and the places it works for. They prioritise health & safety and employee wellbeing. I wanted to be a part of the fantastic organisation which I had once been fortunate to be a part of, so I applied and here I am today.
What do you most enjoy about working in construction?
It’s a great place to work with a culture that is open, communicative and gives everyone a chance to contribute. I enjoy the team structure and the variety of the job. I especially like helping the team to achieve its targets and goals.
What would you say to any young people who may be considering a career in the industry?
Apprenticeships are an excellent way to start. These work-based training schemes are designed to support and develop both new and existing employees and it offers you a nationally recognised qualification while you earn.
There are equal work opportunities for everyone whether you are looking for a desk job or something to get your hands dirty. The work within construction is limitless, it gives you the opportunity to shape the environment around you. It is a good place to meet people and you get great job satisfaction.
If you were to speak to a female student who was considering a career in construction, but was put off by the male-centric landscape, what advice would you give them?
The industry has changed over the years and is committed to attracting more women into built environment, engineering, operational and general construction careers. Everyone is supportive no matter what your gender is.
I would urge more women to consider the construction industry as a career option there are some wonderful opportunities, great training with great prospects and great rewards. The group is committed to delivering diversity and inclusion. It continues to reinforce the message, actively seeks to encourage more women into the group and has several women in senior roles.
