A Teesside University building is set to be transformed into a dedicated multi-functional study space for postgraduate students as Esh Construction is appointed as main contractor.
The Buttery building will be refurbished and extended in a £5 million project to create a bright, contemporary, and inspiring place exclusively for postgraduate students and researchers to study, collaborate, and socialise on campus.
Collaborative workspaces, quiet study zones, media booths and state of the art digital facilities, as well as a social lounge and refreshment facilities, will feature in the new Postgraduate Student Hub, with the design developed in consultation with students.
Designed by Howard Litchfield Architects, the project will restore the building’s heritage features while creating an innovative environment suitable for modern day use. Parquet flooring, exposed brickwork, timber beams and trusses will be revived, while the addition of mezzanine levels will maximise usage while maintaining light and volume throughout the space.
An existing 1970’s extension will be demolished and replaced with a new entrance extension which will boast full height glazing and Corten panels.
Esh Construction has been appointed as design and build contractor to deliver the development. Stuart Leslie, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to secure this contract and to be working in partnership with Teesside University once again on another regeneration scheme.
“This renovation project will build on the success of the Victoria Building refurbishment which completed last year, which saw Esh restore a 129-year-old building into a new business hub within the university’s enterprise zone. Reviving period features was a key aspect of that project, and we look forward to working with the design team to bring another heritage building into use for 21st century times.”
The Postgraduate Student Hub is the latest project in Teesside University’s ambitious Campus Masterplan and is the first project to break ground since the Covid-19 pandemic. With £275m invested to date, the Campus Masterplan sets out a dynamic and ambitious programme of investment to 2027, transforming the campus and providing vibrant and modern facilities to enhance the experience of students, staff, and partners.

Construction is due to commence in February 2022 and will be delivered by Esh in partnership with Howarth Litchfield Architects, Summers Inman, and Fairhurst.
