Esh Construction’s Steenberg’s Yard development is weathertight for winter

The 28-apartment Ouseburn Valley development is due for completion in summer 2021.

Ouseburn Valley’s newest residential development has reached a key milestone as the apartment building is now weathertight ready for the winter.

Delivered by Esh’s commercial build division on behalf of PfP igloo – an exciting partnership that brings together two of the UK’s leading placemaking names – the development known as Steenberg’s Yard will provide 28 stylish and spacious two and three-bedroom apartments situated above four commercial units. Situated in Newcastle’s Lower Ouseburn, the new homes are due for completion in summer 2021.

Construction work has forged ahead in recent weeks as the steel framework – made of approximately 350 tonne of steel – timber roof joists, rafters and roof covering were completed. The roof slates, superstructure masonry, and window and door installation have sealed the five-storey building to achieve the important weathertight milestone.

Onlookers will see the building’s Scandinavian-style exterior unveiled as the scaffold will be gradually removed throughout December. While internally, partition walls are well underway and mechanical and electrical first fix works have commenced.

Gary Dobson, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with PfP igloo as we make headway with both Steenberg’s Yard and Leeds-based development, The Ironworks.

“Steenberg’s Yard is a stunning development which will provide sought after new homes in the vibrant and cultured Lower Ouseburn Valley. We are delighted to achieve this key milestone which is due to the hard work and determination of the project team who have worked collaboratively and safely in line with COVID-safe procedures. We look forward to seeing the progress internally over the months ahead.”

Neighbouring Newcastle’s Toffee Factory and boasting outdoor terrace space with river views, Steenberg’s Yard is contemporary in design with natural light and space a key feature throughout.  The building exterior and development name acknowledges the areas namesake, Mr Richard Steenberg, who moved to the area from Denmark in the 1850s and started a warehousing business on the site.

Katie Sully, Development Director at igloo Regeneration said: “This year more than ever, people are reassessing how and where they want to live. These homes are going to be quite special and the Ouseburn way of life is unrivalled. People fall in love with the rich character of the place as well as the tranquillity of the riverside and the creative community spirit. It’s proving to be a real draw and we are delighted that a quarter of the homes are already reserved.”

Work initially got underway on the project late 2019. Esh Construction working is in partnership with Cundall, Identity Consult, Gleedsxsite architecture LLP and Black and White Engineering to deliver the build, while estate agent, Urban Base, is managing the apartment sales.
