Work to redevelop Tuned In! into a vibrant hub for creativity and performing arts is due to start this month, following Esh Construction being appointed as contractor by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.
The transformation will help to secure the long-term future of Tuned In! as a dynamic, creative and inclusive space for children and young people, families, residents and visitors.
Funded by a £2 million grant from the UK Government, Esh Construction will develop an improved main performance space, paving the way for a new community theatre to host live music, theatre, comedy, and a range of events.
The café facilities will be upgraded to create a welcoming daytime social hub, while also providing a lively space for evening audiences. Additionally, the building will benefit from modernised spaces specifically designed to support a programme of events, workshops, and activities for children, young people, their families, and the wider community.
Grant Watson, Construction Manager at Esh Construction, said: “It is great to be working alongside Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council on another development that will become an important asset for the local community.
“We are proud to bring our expertise to this scheme and look forward to delivering a high-quality space that will be extremely valuable for young people – it’s an exciting project to be involved in.”
The project will complement recent developments in the Coatham area, including the boating lake, beach base, crazy golf course and the play park.
Leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, Cllr Alec Brown, said: “The investment in Tuned In! is about more than bricks and mortar – it’s about creating spaces where young people can thrive and express themselves.
“It was important to secure the long-term future of Tuned In! for our young people, residents and visitors and develop it as a place where the community, creativity and opportunity come together.”
Esh will work in partnership with Identity Consult, Howarth Litchfield, Studio Horn, Sine Consulting and Charcoal Blue to deliver the project which is expected to complete in spring 2026.
