Esh Construction completes major road works to improve Swans Corner Roundabout

The project was delivered on behalf of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council.

Major road works to improve the A171 Swans Corner roundabout in Nunthorpe are now complete. The project was delivered by Esh Construction’s civil engineering division in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Council and Arup.

Work commenced in March 2022 and involved the removal of the old roundabout and replacing it with a lozenge-shaped central island as well as widening approach roads and installing pedestrian crossing facilities. The highway works were designed to improve existing journey times, reduce congestion and accommodate future traffic growth.

Alan Croft, construction manager at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to have successfully completed the highway improvement works at the A171 Swan’s Corner roundabout.

“The scheme presented its own challenges due to the location and complexity of the works. However, our phased approach to the works reduced disruption to those affected with traffic flows and pedestrian routes being maintained throughout the scheme. We worked closely with the local residents, businesses and the Nunthorpe Academy to ensure all those immediately affected by the works were kept up to date throughout the scheme and disruption was minimised where possible.”

Councillor Cliff Foggo, cabinet member for highways and transport at Redcar & Cleveland Council, said: “These improvements have been designed to improve traffic flow for many years to come and this is a major gain. It’s taken a long time but it is worth it and we know people are already seeing the benefit. I’d like to thank the vast majority of motorists for their patience but, more importantly, helping ensure the safety of pedestrians, construction workers and other motorists while work was ongoing.”

As part of Esh’s commitment to deliver social value within the local community, a Middlesbrough College student completed a five-day work placement on site, two Get into STEM sessions and a site safety presentation were delivered at Whale Hill Primary School, and a donation was made to The Friends of Morton Carr Wood which will support ongoing environmental improvements ongoing within the area. Nunthorpe Secondary School also took part in Esh’s brand-new careers programme, with teaching staff and students helping shape the sessions which aim to educate young people on how the everyday school curriculum links to roles within the construction industry.
