Esh Construction champions rising talent with affordable housing trio

Esh's Libby, Dom and James on pathway for career success.

Esh Construction has announced the promotion and development of three rising stars within its affordable housing division.

Libby Hodgkin, Dom Burns and James Imiela are all at different stages in their careers, carving their own unique paths into the industry, but together they reflect Esh’s ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and investing in the next generation of construction professionals.

Each of the three team members has taken a unique path into the industry, but all share a common drive to grow, learn, and contribute meaningfully to the delivery of high-quality, affordable homes across the North East.

Libby Hodgkin joined Esh in 2023 as an Assistant Site Manager and has recently been promoted to Site Manager at Kedward Avenue, where Esh is delivering 105 new affordable homes.

With a background in bricklaying and a passion for building strong teams, Libby is already looking ahead to her goal of becoming a Contracts Manager. She said: “Being promoted has given me the confidence to use my skills and knowledge. It’s rewarding to see a site transform into homes for future residents — and to know I’ve played a part in that. I’d recommend any woman looking to start a career in construction to do it. It can be hard work but it’s extremely rewarding.”

James Imiela joined Esh in March after working in roles across telecommunications and rail infrastructure. Working as a trainee assistant site manager in Pelton, where Esh is delivering 104 new homes for affordable rent, he is set to begin a Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor course at New College Durham.

“I wanted a career where I could progress and be challenged,” James said. “Esh has given me the opportunity to learn on the job while working toward qualifications that will help me grow into more senior roles.”

Dom Burns started out with Esh as a trainee assistant site manager and was promoted to assistant site manager in June. After enrolling on a Higher National Certificate in September 2023, he’s now preparing for a Higher Technical Qualification in Construction Management. He said: “There’s never a boring day at Esh. The training has given me a vast knowledge of the intertwining parts of construction, with thorough insights into safety, quality and building regulations.

“I’ve seen how site managers and assistant managers work together to create an efficient site and I’m looking forward to furthering my knowledge in the industry.”

The trio’s experiences highlight how diverse routes into the industry – from trade backgrounds to career changes – can open doors to new opportunities.

Mark Binns, Operations Director at Esh Construction, said: “James, Libby, and Dom are fantastic examples of what can be achieved when talent is matched with opportunity. At Esh, we believe in developing people from the ground up — providing real career pathways, hands-on experience, and the support needed to thrive. Their journeys underline our commitment to training and growing our own, and we’re incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved so far.”

Their stories show how, with the right support and opportunities, individuals from a range of backgrounds can thrive in construction. By investing in training, hands-on experience, and clear progression routes, Esh is helping to develop a skilled and motivated workforce.
