£16m Doncaster affordable housing scheme given the green light

A development which will create 126 new homes in Askern, Doncaster, has been granted planning permission.

Planning permission has been granted for 56 affordable homes, 12 bungalows and a three-storey retirement living building containing 58 apartments in a £16m land led development.

A result of a combined effort between Esh Construction, Constructing Growth and D5 Planning, the scheme will be delivered by Esh’s affordable housing division in partnership with Housing 21 and Together Housing Group.

Esh has worked with DevCom for the development’s architectural and pre-construction services, and Brewster Bye Architects is responsible for the design of the retirement living building and adjacent bungalows on behalf of Housing 21.

Located off Highfield Road, Askern in Doncaster, the development meets an identified housing need in the district whilst the retirement living element will meet the requirements of an ageing population.

The 56 affordable homes and 10 bungalows being constructed for Together Housing Group will benefit from front and rear gardens and parking facilities. Housing 21 will take ownership of 58 apartments in the retirement living building and two retirement living bungalows. A mix of one and two-bedroom apartments will be available, as well as communal facilities, landscaped gardens and dedicated parking on-site.

The neighbourhood will be focused around extensive public open space, with the design including footpath links to the surrounding community. A Sustainable Urban Drainage scheme will also be implemented at the development.

Chris Hale, Estimating Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to see this scheme which has been long in the making finally come to fruition. The development is a result of a huge effort from the project team and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in getting to this point. Esh Construction has circa £35m of land led projects on site or due to commence, and this represents a strong part of our affordable housing division’s future workload.”

Lee Robinson, Managing Director of Constructing Growth, said: “We are pleased to have worked in partnership to meet the huge demand for new affordable housing and retirement living homes in Doncaster. This has been a strong collaboration with Esh Construction, Housing 21, Together Housing Group and Doncaster Council to deliver these much-needed new homes.”

Geoff Reynolds, Property Development Manager at Housing 21, said: “Housing 21 is a leading provider of Retirement Housing and Extra Care for older people of modest means and we are excited to be working together with Esh Construction, Doncaster Council and Together Housing Group to offer further Retirement Housing in Doncaster.

This latest development will provide people over the age of 65 with choice and control over their living arrangements as residents will benefit from having their own front door while having access to communal facilities, such as lounge and garden, offering a safe and secure place to call home.”

Hilary Brady, Head of Development for Together Housing Group, said: “Together Housing are proud to be partners on this exciting South Yorkshire scheme, that will deliver much needed additional housing options in the area and meet the needs of local residents.  Delivering a variety of new and affordable housing solutions is a leading strategic objective for Together Housing and one that we are committed to, so that the people we serve within our communities are able to live well and thrive.”

Mark Henderson, from Brewster Bye, said: “Securing planning permission is a fantastic result for everyone involved with the development, and for Doncaster as a whole. The site was allocated for housing in the Doncaster Unitary Development Plan and lies within an area that is promoted for housing in the Core Strategy. Once complete, it will offer a much-needed mix of homes for local people and will be a wonderful place to live that will further enhance the vibrancy of the local area.”
