Over recent years, residents of The Broadway, Whitley Bay have suffered from extensive flooding. Northumbrian Water has invested £1.75 million into a programme of works to help protect homes from flooding in North Shields, appointing Esh-Stantec as the D&B contractor to alleviate the flooding issue.
In order to alleviate the flooding issue at The Broadway, Whitley Bay, Esh-Stantec designed a solution to provide additional capacity within the local drainage network. This involved the construction of a new precast concrete storage tank and associated drainage. The works were required in order to provide necessary flood alleviation to the affected properties at The Broadway, Whitley Bay.
Works were carried out in two distinct areas, with Area 1 being the junction between Broadway and Hartington Road and the other being in the playing fields of Cullercoats FC:
- Broadway / Hartington Road Junction – The works involved the rationalisation of the existing sewer network within the junction and also the installation of overflow pipe work down towards the storage tank. All works within the junction had to be undertaken whilst maintaining two-way directional traffic.
- Cullercoats FC Playing Fields – The main proportion of works carried out was the installation of a 1,000 cubic metres storage tank.
