Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council
NEC Option C
The improvement works involved major realignment works to the road system to provide a new direct link from the M1 motorway onto the local road network, reducing existing traffic congestion at the A61 Birdwell roundabout and improving bus services.
The works included the reconstruction of the existing Birdwell roundabout to provide an enlarged gyratory system that increased capacity and improved connections with adjoining roads to support both current and future forecasted traffic demands.
A major priority roundabout was constructed to the east adjacent the A6135 which enabled the inclusion of a link road to an additional second major roundabout adjacent the existing Rockingham roundabout. Significant scheme elements included:
- 70,000m3 of earthworks
- Grouting of mineworking’s
- 720m of road widening
- 3000m2 of new road construction
- Management of numerous service diversions
- New traffic signals to two roundabouts
- Streetlighting and CCTV installation
The works area was very traffic sensitive and therefore we maintained close liaison with multiple stakeholders including, Highways England, residents and businesses as well as bus companies. We provided details of phasing changes, planned road closures and alternative routes.
