At Esh Construction, we believe apprentices are the future of our industry. Each year, we welcome new talent into the business, supporting people at the very start of their careers to learn, develop and build their future in construction.
If you’re thinking about applying for one of our apprenticeship opportunities, the interview stage can feel like a big step, especially if it’s your first one. The good news is that a bit of preparation can make all the difference, helping you feel more confident and ready to show what you can bring to the role.
Get to know the company
Before your interview, take some time to learn about the company you’re applying to. At Esh, apprentices work on real projects from day one and are supported by experienced teams across a wide range of disciplines. Understanding what a company does, where it works, and the types of projects it delivers shows that you’ve taken the time to prepare and are genuinely interested. It gives you something to talk about in your interview and allows you to stand out from the crowd.
Explore the role and the industry
Construction offers a wide range of opportunities, from site-based roles through to technical, digital and office-based careers. Having an understanding of your chosen role will help you explain why it’s right for you. If you’re unsure where to start, the Go Construct website – www.goconstruct.org – is a great resource. It provides clear information on career pathways across the industry, helping you get a better understanding of what employers are looking for and where the journey an apprenticeship could take you on.
Think about why an apprenticeship is right for you
You don’t need to have everything mapped out, but it’s important to show that you’ve thought about your next step. What appeals to you about an apprenticeship? Is it the hands-on, practical experience, earning while you learn, or building skills in a real working environment. At Esh, we often hear from apprentices that being part of live projects early on helps them develop confidence and skills in a way that classroom learning alone can’t provide. Being able to discuss this, even in a simple way, shows an enthusiasm and willingness to learn.
Use real-life examples to show your strengths
When answering questions, try to avoid giving a short answer without any evidence to support your claim, such as: “Yes, I am really good at working in a team.” Instead, work on some answers which will show how you have successfully demonstrated the skill you are being asked about. You might not have lots of work experience, and that’s completely expected. Instead, think about situations from school, college, hobbies or part-time work where you’ve demonstrated key skills that you could use in the role. This might be working as part of a team, meeting deadlines, solving problems or taking responsibility. Construction is a collaborative industry, so showing how you approach tasks and work with others is important.
Make a strong first impression
Small details can go a long way. Arriving on time, dressing appropriately and showing a positive attitude all help create a great first impression. Most importantly, be yourself. Showing how you are motivated, reliable and ready to learn will always stand out.
Ask questions and show interest
An interview is a two-way conversation – the job also has to be right for you! Don’t be nervous about asking questions about the role, your training, or what a typical day might look like. It shows that you’re engaged and interested in building a career. It’s also a great opportunity to learn more about what to expect and how the apprenticeship will support your development.
Take a moment before you begin
It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially if you haven’t done many interviews before. Take a few minutes to gather your thoughts and focus on why you applied so that you feel more in control. Remember, everyone starts somewhere. Apprenticeships are designed to help you grow, so the interview is your chance to indicate your willingness to get started and make the most of the opportunity.
