Esh Construction completes refurbishment of Marton Road Interchange

Esh Construction has successfully completed a refurbishment programme at the A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange in Middlesbrough, extending the lifespan of the 54-year-old structure and ensuring it can continue to serve the community for years to come.

Delivered in partnership with Middlesbrough Council, the scheme began in March 2026 and involved a significant programme of structural repairs and upgrades while maintaining access across one of the town’s busiest routes.

The project required the use of a contraflow system on the A172 and occasional overnight road closures to allow works to be carried out safely and efficiently.

Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “This scheme has involved a significant programme of repairs and upgrades to extend the lifespan of an important piece of Middlesbrough’s infrastructure.

“Working in close partnership with Middlesbrough Council, we’ve successfully delivered a range of structural repairs and improvements that will enhance the resilience of the structure and ensure it continues to serve the community for decades to come.”

The refurbishment works included concrete repairs beneath the bridge, replacement waterproofing and expansion joints, carriageway resurfacing, and the installation of new kerbs and footways. A new pedestrian parapet and guardrails were also installed to improve safety for road users and pedestrians.

The bridge and A174 slip roads have now fully reopened to traffic following completion of the works.

“Working closely with Esh Construction, we’ve worked hard to avoid lengthy disruptions and keep traffic flowing across the bridge throughout.

The refurbishment has provided the structure with a new lease of life, improving its long-term durability and helping to maintain a vital transport link for motorists, pedestrians and local communities across Middlesbrough.
