Esh Construction has completed a major restoration programme at Abbeydale Dam in Sheffield, securing the long-term future of one of the city’s most significant heritage assets.
Delivered on behalf of Sheffield City Council in partnership with Sheffield Museums Trust, the £1.3 million project has repaired and strengthened the 18th-century dam at Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, a Scheduled Monument and internationally important industrial heritage site.
The works were commissioned back in 2021 after significant leaks developed within the dam structure, resulting in water escaping through the North East corner and creating pressure behind the historic stonework. Temporary measures were implemented to stabilise the structure, however a permanent solution was required to protect the dam and the wider site.

Working within a site of such historical importance required a sensitive approach, combining modern engineering expertise with traditional conservation techniques to ensure the dam's future while preserving its heritage value.

Throughout the project, Esh worked closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and ensure works were carried out in alignment to the requirements associated with working on a Scheduled Monument. The restoration works addressed critical structural issues, with repairs including the rebuilding and repointing of displaced stone walls using traditional stonemasonry techniques, the installation of clay linings and waterproof membranes to prevent future leakage, and the grouting of voids to strengthen weakened sections of the structure.
