Demolition of vacant independent living accommodation paves way for affordable homes in Wakefield

Esh Construction is set to deliver over 30 new homes on behalf of WDH.

Two sites which were formerly home to independent living accommodation for older people in Wakefield, are set to be redeveloped to provide 38 new affordable homes.

The developments known as Greenhill Road and Colin Barnaby Court have been brought forward by WDH in a combined investment of £5.5 million and will be delivered by Esh Construction.

Esh has been on site at Greenhill Road since November 2020 to complete the demolition of the two-storey flats and three garages which had been vacant since 2018. Now work is underway to build 14 new two and three-bedroom homes which will be available for affordable rent and shared ownership.

Located just three miles apart, approval has now been given for the transformation of Colin Barnaby Court which will see the demolition of an independent living scheme. A new access road into the development will lead the way into 24 new homes which will also be available for affordable rent and shared ownership.

Stuart Leslie, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “We are delighted to build on our successful working relationship with WDH, after securing the contract for these two developments via the Efficiency North framework. Forming part of our expanding portfolio of £50 million new affordable housing schemes across the region, we are proud to be transforming two inhabited sites into much needed homes for the community.”

Sue Young, WDH’s Executive Director of Investment, said: “Development and providing high quality homes is a key part of our business. We are delighted to be providing more new homes for our customers across the district, both for rent and for sale with shared ownership.

“These schemes will provide more energy efficient accommodation than previously situated on the sites and will enhance the Wakefield area, attracting more families and professionals, offering a range of modern living options for prospective customers and tenants close to the city centre and its excellent transport links.”

WDH has worked alongside Homes England to bring the scheme to fruition with combined funding of £1.2 million being granted.
