Overview
This is Far More than Just a ‘Lick of Paint’.
The Tyne Bridge restoration is one of the most complex civil engineering projects underway in the region.
Esh was appointed under a two-stage contract, first carrying out detailed investigations and a full assessment of the extent and cost of repairs required.
Over 1,200 steel, concrete, stonework and masonry repairs are being carried out, including structural repairs to the bridge’s hangers. Alongside this, the bridge must be fully grit blasted and repainted.
The Detail
A Local Contractor for a Regional Icon
Marking the first major maintenance delivered to the iconic structure in over two decades, the scaffolding must be installed over 20 phases to maintain the integrity of the bridge’s load capacity, while maintaining access for traffic and pedestrians throughout.
The condition of the existing structure requires the design of some complex temporary works to allow the various loadings to bypass sections of corroded steel before they can be replaced with new.
Due to its Grade II* listed status, the paint colour being used is called ‘Hollybush Green’ and a three-coat paint system has been chosen for its durability, UV resistance, protective and colour retention qualities, and its resistance to the harsh atmospheric environment of the bridge.
A project like this is ‘once in a lifetime’, so they say, and we take immense pride in restoring and preserving the Tyne Bridge for generations to come.
Our Impact
There’s more to the Tyne Bridge Restoration than Construction
As well as maintaining a major cross river route, the delivery of meaningful social value initiatives is poised to create real and lasting impact.
Within the first year of the restoration, over 1,000 days had been worked on site by apprentices and trainees, and more than 2,300 students have been engaged in employability, careers and STEM sessions across Newcastle and Gateshead.
From the development of a virtual reality programme to make the bridge’s history accessible to the deaf community, to work placements and school sessions - these are just a few examples of what we have been up to so far.
A bespoke project website – created inhouse – keeps members of the public fully up to date with all areas of this interesting project, and an Information Hub on Newcastle Quayside welcomes visitors each week.
