Overview
Connecting Communities, Promoting Active Travel
This transformative active travel scheme enhanced connectivity and sustainable transport options in Rotherham.
Over 2km of new cycle routes were delivered along the A6178 Sheffield Road and Westgate corridor, improving safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians. Alongside this, 2.8km of new bus lanes were constructed on the 8-mile A631 route from Rotherham to Maltby.
The scheme won the ‘Delivering Value’ award at the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire & Humber Awards 2025.
The Detail
Delivering Sustainable Transport Routes and Community Value
Procured through YORhub’s YORcivil2 framework via a two-stage tender, Esh managed the initial design phase and on-site construction.
Extensive logistical planning and collaboration was required to reduce disruption given the work was delivered across online travel networks and key commuter routes.
Key elements of the project involved the realignment of two major roundabouts to facilitate new cycle infrastructure, along with footpath construction, numerous statutory utility diversions and the construction of new signalised junctions with pedestrian crossings. Works included 36,433m² of carriageway resurfacing and 1,424m² of full carriageway construction, complemented by 17,160m² of footway works.
In recognition of the outstanding collaborative and partnership working approach on the project, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council was named ‘Client of the Year’ at the CECA Yorkshire & the Humber Annual Awards 2025 after Esh’s nomination.
Our Impact
Setting the standard for social value: targets smashed by 361%
Crowned the winner of the ‘Delivering Value’ award by Constructing Excellence, this project is a stand-out for meaningful social value delivery in the region. By exceeding National Themes, Outcomes, Measures (TOMs) Framework targets by 361%, the scheme delivered far-reaching benefits for the Rotherham community.
Through partnerships with local schools and colleges, as well as regional events, over 12,900 young people received insightful sessions and engagement opportunities which raised awareness around careers in construction and STEM. A partnership with education provider, RNN Academy, and the Better Learners Better Works programme saw Esh provide 479 hours of school engagement through its established education programmes.
The project also created meaningful employment and training opportunities, with 97 apprentice weeks completed and seven local residents employed. In addition, more than £1.3 million was reinvested into the local economy through responsible procurement with regional suppliers and subcontractors.
