Overview

Remodelling and Refurbishing a Heritage Building

Howden Dene underwent a comprehensive transformation to preserve the building’s historic character while meeting modern, retirement living standards.

Originally built in 1890, Esh Construction remodelled and refurbished the existing building to create 14 one and two-bedroom retirement living apartments, alongside a communal living space and guest suite.

The scheme, designed by Brewster Bye Architects, involved a full internal strip out and asbestos removal, a mechanical and electrical upgrade, installation of a 24-hour emergency call system and new lift, and the replacement of windows with traditional timber sash designs.

Drawing on our experience with heritage and listed buildings, the renovation was carried out sensitively to retain key architectural features and respect the building’s history.
