Overview
Setting the Standard for Sustainable Emergency Service Hubs
Hebburn Tri Station is a pioneering development that can lead the way for future sustainable blue light buildings. It was formally opened by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh in 2024.
Described as a ‘landmark’ building which promotes collaboration in the heart of the community, it has brought together three of the region’s emergency service organisations under one roof. At the time of construction, it was the country’s first carbon neutral tri-service station.
The Detail
Building a Greener Future for Emergency Services
Two purpose-built facilities now stand on the site: a main building housing staff accommodation, offices, and appliance bays for emergency vehicles, alongside a dedicated training centre for specialist rescue and rope rescue teams.
The structure incorporates 585 hot-rolled steel girders weighing 151 tonnes, installed by a Sunderland-based firm, and features 12 boreholes with a cumulative depth of more than 2,500m which help provide hot water.
Sustainability is at the heart of the design, with modern technologies - ground source heat pumps, 340 solar photo voltaic panels rainwater harvesting, and electric vehicle (EV) charging points – installed to meet the energy requirements for the facility and ensure it achieves carbon neutral status. A wildflower meadow also features in a boost for local biodiversity.
This innovative hub is now home to Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, Northumbria Police, and North East Ambulance Service - working together to deliver safe, responsive care for the community.
Our Impact
Creating Lasting Community Benefits with £7.2m Social Value
Hebburn Tri Station stands as a leading example of a project that has delivered varied, impactful and far-reaching social value.
Procured via the North East Procurement Organisation (NEPO) and utilising the National Themes, Outcomes, Measures (TOMs) Framework, the scheme achieved an impressive £7.2 million in social value, equating to a 72% social return on investment.
Our commitment to the community included 46 volunteering hours with local charities such as Key 2 Life Food Bank and Emmaus North East, supporting initiatives from furniture assembly to Christmas decoration making. We donated £5,000 to local causes, including grassroots football team Jarrow Pumas.
Nearly half of operatives hailed from Tyne and Wear, and 235 apprentice or T Level training weeks were delivered – giving new entrants in the industry an opportunity to learn and develop on a live and exciting construction site.
