Overview
Nature and Community, Reimagined in Bridlington
Gypsey Race Park Phase 2 (Areas 3 and 4) delivered a transformative public realm scheme in Bridlington in 2020, re-engineering the land and banks around the Gypsey Race watercourse.
The £3.4 million project – led by Esh’s civil engineering division in partnership with East Riding of Yorkshire Council – created new green spaces, improved habitats, and enhanced community access to the town, supporting its wider regeneration plans.
The Detail
Engineering Excellence Meets Sustainable Urban Renewal
The project focused on engineering and landscaping works between Hilderthorpe Road and Coach Park in Bridlington. It included re-profiling the riverbanks, installing new lighting, and planting trees to create a vibrant green corridor. New seating, a natural play area, and woodland paths were introduced to encourage active lifestyles and closer engagement with nature.
Working in partnership with Maccaferri Ltd, 1,500 cubic metres of GEOCELL® foam glass aggregate – a high-quality insulation hardcore – was installed as structural backfill to a new Green Terramesh reinforced soil slope. The foam glass aggregate offered not only an 80% weight reduction compared to normal fill materials, but comprises 99% recycled glass.
The works followed Esh Construction’s successful delivery of Phase 1, which included creating a flow balancing area with a viewing platform, cleaning the riverbed, and improvements to the water course and banks.
Our Impact
Empowering Communities, Sustaining Essential Local Services
Alongside the delivery of our award-winning Get into STEM programme at a local primary school, we supported Driffield Wolds Food Bank with a donation and volunteering hours.
The food bank was at risk of having nowhere to operate from, however we teamed up with YORhub to deliver an emergency makeover of its new premises and enable food and other essentials to be stored safely. Decorating materials and supplies were also donated to support the creation of a community hub in the future.
The collaboration was part of our commitment to the YOR4Good Fund – a community grant initiative which supports economic regeneration projects through schemes awarded via YORhub frameworks. It supported the food bank to provide continuity of a vital service for the local community.
