In his role as Carbon, Sustainability & Data Manager at Esh Group, Steven Doran plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s journey to net zero.
After taking the lead on the implementation of Esh’s Even Greener strategy in 2023, Steven has continued his strong focus on enhancing internal engagement throughout the business – ensuring every department understands its role in sustainability.
From trialling solar hybrid generators to rolling out anti-idling trials within the fleet, Steven’s leadership has seen Esh cut its carbon emissions year-on-year.
We spoke to him to find out more – proving that when we invest in sustainability, we don’t just reduce carbon, we build a culture of change.
I’ve always believed that sustainability isn’t just a conversation for boardrooms, it’s something every colleague can influence. Whether it’s reducing idling time, switching to hybrid vehicles, or simply turning off unused equipment, small actions can make a big difference. One of the proudest moments in my career was seeing our HGV fleet’s idling hours drop from 392 to just 37 in a few months.
That transformation didn’t come from policy, it came from people understanding the role they play and choosing to make a change. Being a team is what matters most, and if we all push towards the same goal, positive impacts will follow. That’s the culture we’re building here at Esh.
When I joined Esh in 2007, carbon wasn’t a daily topic. Now, it’s embedded into everything we do, from procurement to site operations. I’ve had the chance to mentor younger colleagues through T Levels and internal training, and their passion for sustainability is infectious. It pushes me to want to keep learning, keep improving, and keep challenging the status quo. We’re not perfect, but we’re committed, and that’s what makes the journey worth it.
