Cole Wilson started off his career in construction with a four-week work placement at Lumsden & Carroll’s scheme at Lambton Park. That initial experience opened the door to an apprenticeship in civil engineering, setting the foundations for the beginning of a rewarding career.
Today, Cole is not only thriving on site but also mentoring new trainees and apprentices, sharing practical knowledge and guiding them through the same journey that has so far seen him succeed.
At Esh Group’s 2025 Group Get Together, Cole was one of seven to receive the Esh Factor’s ‘Trainee or Apprentice of the Year’ award, recognising his commitment and passion to his role.
We caught up with Cole to hear first-hand about his journey and what makes this experience so rewarding.
My apprenticeship has given me the chance to learn hands-on. I’m gaining real, significant experience every day, alongside earning a qualification at the end of it. At university, I wouldn’t have had this level of exposure to site work, and that practical knowledge is invaluable to me. Working on my own site has helped me grow in confidence and take ownership of projects.
I’m pleased to bring through my own trainees and show them how I work. It’s about giving others the same opportunity I had, and I enjoy seeing the progress – not just from them, but mine too. Taking home the Esh Factor award was a highlight in my career so far. To be recognised by the senior leadership team for my work ethic was definitely a proud moment.
