General Manager Jonny Pyle explains how Esh’s drainage solutions division took on the challenge of re-lining over 1,200 metres of sewer within Auckland Park, a 150-acre historic parkland which was established over 800 years ago by the Prince Bishops of Durham.
The project formed part of a wider wastewater network upgrade scheme which Esh-Stantec was delivering for Northumbrian Water Group.
The re-lining was required to strengthen and protect a section of sewer for years to come. And, given the technology, equipment and expertise within our delivery teams, we were tasked with developing a programme and scope of works that would ensure 17 lengths of sewer were re-lined within seven weeks.
The Project Detail
The scope of works involved re-lining 1,200 metres of 225mm and 300mm diameter sewer on a line which runs from a field adjacent to the A688, through Bishop Auckland Golf Course and through a protected woodland area within Auckland Park.
We programmed the work in two phases – the first of which involved setting up 1,000 metres of over-pumping to pass the flows over land for 11 lengths of sewer. Once the over-pumping was set up, we carried out cleansing of the sewer line with high pressure jetting units and used a lateral cutter to descale.
Vactors, remote reels, UV equipment, a winch, towable generator and various cutters were used on site, including a track avant unit instead of a wheeled option to protect the ground and woodland surroundings.
After successfully completing the first 11 lengths of sewer within 21 days, the second phase required the over-pumping to be dismantled – including two 6-inch pumps, 8-inch over land polypropylene pipework and various road ramps – all equipment relocated and another 850 metres of over-pumping installed to enable the final 6 lengths to be cleansed and re-lined. The road ramps were used to maintain safe access to the park for members of the public and a local farmer.
