At Esh Group, we continue to remain focussed on committing real time to apprentices, recognising their talent and positive impact that they have on the business. During this year’s National Apprenticeship Week campaign, we are shining a light on 20-year-old Joshua Craggs, currently studying a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Administration.
Joining Esh in September 2025, Joshua has already shown a willingness to progress in his position as Apprentice Eco Framework Coordinator, improving his knowledge in the role through remote studying with East Durham College. We recently caught up with him to find out more about how his apprenticeship is going so far.
Can you tell us about your background before joining Esh Group?
After completing my A Levels in Business, IT and Criminology, I drifted from a range of different jobs; from hospitality to office-based roles, helping to support my mam at home. I was left feeling unfulfilled and wanting more so, after a discussion with a careers coach, I joined The King’s Trust – an organisation aiming to help people aged 16-30 gain the confidence and skills they need to succeed in a career. I grabbed the opportunity with both hands and, through networking opportunities, met Aley Wright and Alex Mathieson from Esh Group, opening the door to gaining experience with Esh’s IT department.
During my work experience, I was eager to learn as much as possible about the industry, the company, and life in a busy office environment. I loved coming into work and really valued the people I was surrounded by. Spending three days a week in the office gave me a strong understanding of the team’s processes and day-to-day operations. This placement was key to helping me secure my apprenticeship, as it gave me a valuable insight into the company and real hands-on experience.
What made you consider a career in construction?
In the beginning, I never imagined myself working in the construction industry. But after taking part in the ‘World of Work’ tour with The King’s Trust and hearing colleagues at Esh share their experiences, I realised it was somewhere I could genuinely see myself enjoying a career. It inspired me to apply for an apprenticeship with Esh, so during my break, I did exactly that.
I’ve quickly grown to love the company and believe it’s somewhere I can make a future for myself. I’ve always had a strong desire to support people and Esh offers the perfect platform to make a meaningful contribution to my local community.
I was drawn to the idea of working with different teams and being part of projects that deliver essential services to local people. The working atmosphere at Esh is so welcoming, and I appreciate the genuine time and support they invest in young people like myself. It feels like the right place for me – a place surrounded by individuals who are not only industry leaders, but also ethical and thoughtful.
How have you progressed in your role since you started your apprenticeship?
Since I joined the business last year, I have seen great progression. My colleagues trust me with real responsibility, making me feel like I’m making a difference and that my role within the team is important. Managers within Esh Group aren’t just coordinators, but true supporters that are willing to give a helping hand and pass on their knowledge.
My experience so far left me wanting to give back, so at the ‘World of Work’ tour in October 2025 I volunteered alongside other employees to share my story and inspire others at The King’s Trust. My story is relatable for the students on the course, and I wanted to help them see that no matter your background, you can be successful if you put in the effort.
What would you say to someone who is considering an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is the best way to get involved in any industry. Communicating with industry leaders, gaining hands-on experience, and getting to develop your skills while learning on the job allows you to grow personally and professionally at an earlier stage. Taking on an apprenticeship is the best decision I have made so far for my career, and I am looking forward for what’s to come.
