Through ‘Building My Skills’, we engage with schools in our operational areas to help enhance careers provision, improve employability skills and prepare students for life after education.

Esh Group opens the doors to its sites and offices to over 600 visitors each year. Together with our site teams, we ensure visits are safe, interactive and insightful.
Apprentices are an important the Esh Group culture - many of our senior management team began their careers as apprentices. We currently employ over 90 apprentices, equating to 10% of our workforce, and are proud members of the ‘5% club’.

Different work experience roles available
We employ 1,000 people in the areas we operate. Every scheme we deliver provides an opportunity to create full-time and temporary employment, create apprenticeships, and organise meaningful work experience placements. We have several intervention programmes which cater for those who are not in education, employment or training, as well as for vulnerable groups and those furthest from the job market.
Apprentices are an important part of our culture here at Esh Group. Many of our senior management team began their careers as apprentices.
We offer over 15 different apprenticeship pathways in a range of disciplines, including site, office and customer service roles. There are apprentices in almost all areas of Esh Group; including support services such as health and safety, IT, human resources and training.
We advertise apprenticeship opportunities via the National Apprentice Service (NAS) portal, the local authority and our client. Our dedicated training team manage apprentices on our sites, these include:
New apprentices, saved apprentices, indirect apprentices (those employed within Esh Construction’s supply chain), displaced apprentices and shared apprentices.
We receive, read and monitor all progress reviews from the apprenticeship provider and provide additional advice and support to apprentices who need it. We invest time in our apprentices, so they grow into well rounded, experienced and valued members of our team.
We currently have 78 apprentices, equating to 8% of our workforce, and are proud members of the ‘5% club’. In 2017, ‘Esh Academy’ won the National Civil Engineering Contractor’s Association’s ‘Inspiring Communities’ award.
We run ‘Esh Connexts’, an ‘employer-led’ pre-employment skills programme which targets those not in education, employment or training. The main aims of Esh Connexts are to:
- Improve participant’s knowledge of the construction sector
- Increase motivate and raise aspirations
- Develop employability skills
- Partake in work experience
- Complete industry standard training
- Obtain an operative level CSCS card, and;
- Secure full-time employment
We worked in partnership with Durham County Council, Business Durham and ‘Durham Works’ to deliver a 7-week, 17-day programme with a cohort of 10 participants who had shown an interest in construction.
The cohort took part in a range of enrichment activities, which included; team building, appreciating the importance of leadership, health and safety, company image, environmental matters, interpersonal skills, job applications, CV’s, presentation skills, personal finance/budgeting and physical health. 17 members of Esh Group’s staff and supply chain were involved in the preparation and delivery of sessions.
The programme also included a visit to a commercial build and civil engineering site, a local Biffa Waste transfer station and a tour of Esh Group’s offices — where the cohort were greeted by Esh Group staff.
Industry-standard training was provided to all attendees which included, QCF Health & Safety, Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling, Face Fit and Emergency First Aid. Each member of the cohort took an Operative level CSCS test to obtain a CSCS card, essential for working on site in the construction sector.
All 10 members of the cohort were offered a 4-day work experience placement on a local Esh Construction site. Trades included general operative, painting and decoration, joinery, electrical, vehicle maintenance and IT.
Five of the participants progressed to positive destinations following the programme, including three into work with Esh Construction.
We engage with local colleges, universities and Job Centre Plus’ near our sites to support residents in gaining valuable work experience.
By working with our client and the site management teams, we can advertise meaningful work experience opportunities in a range of job roles including site and office-based positions. Candidates can gain insight and understanding of the construction industry throughout their placement by working alongside a dedicated work placement mentor undertaking ‘real-life’ tasks.
