NEC3 Option A
This 1830s Grade II listed building is situated in the heart of Scarborough Old Town. It was constructed to replace the overflowing market area and improve hygiene and appearance. The project involved significant refurbishment of the market which had been subject to deterioration.
Inside the market hall there was a considerable amount of under utilised space within the building and the opportunity to introduce a mezzanine level was identified.
The market hall stalls were also not constructed in a consistent manner and resulted in variation in quality. To overcome this a contemporary Victorian/thirties design was adopted for the new units and market stalls to complement the existing building design.
The refurbishment has been specifically designed to encourage new businesses and visitors into the market and enable the existing businesses to grow. The new mezzanine level provides an additional 14 units of mixed sizes for businesses whilst maintaining the sense of space and light within the building.
