Hard to Reach Groups

Esh Connexts

Esh Connexts is a training programme designed specifically to train a group of 16-18 year olds who have been identified as being ‘Not in Education, Employment or Training’ (NEET) and to introduce them to the world of work.

The clear aim is to improve the lives and employment prospects of young people involved, all had been adversely affected by a variety of social, personal or cultural issues

The programme includes 5 days work experience within Esh Group as part of a 20 day training course running over 10 weeks. This pre-employment course is unique in that the training sessions are conducted by individual employees from within the Group sharing their personal stories about their own work experiences, background and role with these young people and passing on skills.

The initial training programme was developed in 2009 by Esh Group working with Connexions, with a focus on supporting young people from the Durham and Chester-le-Street areas, whose lives had been affected by a variety of personal, social or cultural issues. The pilot programme saw 12 young people aged 16–19 take part, being encouraged to work mainly in group settings and to engage with their placement opportunities. 8 completed the programme successfully and for many it was their first encounter with the world of work.

“This model has proved that all young people, even those faced with the most challenging personal circumstances can, given the right help and support, break out of worklessness creating worthwhile and rewarding opportunities for themselves. This is a model which should be rolled out more widely.”
