Apprentices are an important part of our culture. Many of our Senior Management team began their careers via the apprenticeship route.
Esh Academy was launched in 2013 to work with Esh Group’s delivery divisions to responsibly recruit apprentices according to commercial need.
In 2014, we made a commitment to recruit 150 apprentices by 2017. In September 2016, we recruited 56 apprentices to take our Group total to 159 – around 13% of our workforce.
We offer a range of apprenticeship pathways in disciplines from site, office and customer service roles. Each apprentice works with a mentor, is trained to compliance levels of all other employees and has the opportunity to meet regularly with the Esh Academy team and other apprentices.
It is our aim to develop all apprentices into well rounded, experienced and highly valued members of our team. We are proud to retain 92% in full-time roles once they complete their apprenticeships. We have fantastic retention rates too, with 100% of apprentices completing their apprenticeship (with a 2016 end date); 34% higher than the national average.
Higher & Further Education
Esh Group works with higher and further education establishments to encourage students to consider the construction industry as a career and to help them develop their employability skills.
We offer 12-50 week undergraduate and gap year placements across various business sectors that allow students to gain first-hand experience of the industry. All students who are offered gap year placements have a mentor who will advise and guide them through real-life business situations.
We are pleased to have offered a number of student’s permanent job positions following their placements with us.
At Esh Group, we do all we can to maintain a happy, motivated and competent workforce, and encourage all employees to develop new skills. Everyone has a ‘Training Passport’, which records all training requirements and course completions.
Within the last calendar year, we have invested over £900,000 in training and we are proud to have won a number of regional and national awards which recognise our commitment to development training. This includes the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Training Company of the Year.
We appreciate all employees are individuals and have different training needs. With this in mind, we provide a suite of 80 softer skills training courses which are available to Esh Group employees.
Everyone has at least one annual Performance Development Review, engaging with their line manager on a one-to-one basis. Development training is agreed as part of the PDR process and booked through Esh Group’s training team.
At Esh Group we recognise the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to our business. Recruiting and retaining valued employees with transferable skill sets is essential to our success.
We are very proud to have been awarded the Silver Covenant as part of the Employer Recognition Scheme, which encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same.
We have created strong links with Careers Transition Partnership to support service leavers and the spouses of military families and are currently finalising our own page on the Transition web site.
We have a tailored career pathway for service leavers and offer employment to Reservists under the Transition Reservist Employment Support Trial. We also support local Armed Forces cadet units with work experience and site visits, provide the Armed Forces Careers team access to over 1,500 students as part of our award winning Building My Skills Programme. We recently entered some of our employees into ‘Executive Stretch’ allowing them to find out about the Reserve service.

Everyone Safely Home
Esh Group’s Everyone Safely Home campaign is designed to keep people safe across our business and the communities in which we operate.
It’s a vision of health and safety practice that has helped us dramatically reduce our Accident Incidence Rate to well below the construction industry average.
We have a dedicated health and safety team of 11, who cover all companies within our operational areas. They also write our health and safety policy, which is reviewed annually and available to all staff. We work hard to make sure that our H&S policy is well known, respected and implemented by our employees and supply chain.
