Apprentices are a significant part of our culture, many of our current Senior Management team began their careers via the apprenticeship route.
Esh Academy, our in-house apprenticeship programme has been setup to responsibly recruit and nurture apprentices according to business need. We offer over 15 different apprenticeship pathways in a range of disciplines from site, office and customer service roles.
We invest time in our apprentices so they grow into well rounded, experienced and valued members of our team – after all they are the workforce of the future.
In 2013 we made the commitment to recruit 150 apprentices and in 2016 we were very proud to welcome 156th apprentice to the Group. Since 2013, 48 of our apprentices have graduated, the remaining 108 equate to around 11% of our workforce.

Higher & Further Education
Esh Group works with higher and further education establishments to encourage students to consider the construction industry as a career and to help them develop their employability skills.
We offer 12-50 week undergraduate and gap year placements across various business sectors that allow students to gain first-hand experience of the industry. All students who are offered gap year placements have a mentor who will advise and guide them through real-life business situations.
We are pleased to have offered a number of student’s permanent job positions following their placements with us.
We do all we can to support a motivated and competent workforce, we encourage all employees to develop new skills. Everyone has a ‘Training Passport’ which records their training requirements and course completions.
We appreciate all employees are individuals and have different training needs and provide a suite of 80 softer skills training courses. Each member of staff has at least one annual Performance Development Review conducted by their line manager. Development training is agreed as part of the process and booked through Esh Group’s training team.
Within the last calendar year, we have invested over £900,000 in training and we are proud to have won several regional and national awards which recognise our commitment to development training. This includes the Civil Engineering Contractors Association Training Company of the Year.
At Esh Group we recognise the value serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to our business. Recruiting and retaining valued employees with transferable skill sets is essential to our success.
We are very proud to have been awarded the Silver Covenant as part of the Employer Recognition Scheme, which encourages employers to support defence and inspire others to do the same.
We have created strong links with Careers Transition Partnership to support service leavers and the spouses of military families and are currently finalising our own page on the Transition web site.
We have a tailored career pathway for service leavers and offer employment to Reservists under the Transition Reservist Employment Support Trial. We also support local Armed Forces cadet units with work experience and site visits, provide the Armed Forces Careers team access to over 1,500 students as part of our award winning Building My Skills Programme. We recently entered some of our employees into ‘Executive Stretch’ allowing them to find out about the Reserve service.

Everyone Safely Home
Esh Group’s Everyone Safely Home campaign is designed to keep people safe across our business and the communities in which we operate. It’s a vision of health and safety practice that has helped us dramatically reduce our Accident Incidence Rate to well below the construction industry average.
We have a dedicated health and safety team of 11, who cover all companies within our operational areas. They also write our health and safety policy, which is reviewed annually and available to all staff. We work hard to make sure that our H&S policy is well known, respected and implemented by our employees and supply chain.
Esh Group has established a set of Whistle Blowing procedures to encourage any person or organisations to raise concerns in an appropriate manner. These procedures are also designed to support the rate of detection of poor practice and when necessary, bring about appropriate corrective action.
